The roots of modern psychoanalysis
extend well into the 19th century, when the dominant
paradigm of cause-and-effect determinism ruled intelligent
explanations of psychological phenomenon. But with the dawn of the
20th century came an unsettling awareness of relativity
and quantum theory, throwing human consciousness into the ring
against materialism to fight the battle of understanding mind and
matter. The contest continues to this very day, both sides enriched
by both science and belief. At stake is a paradigm shift in our
personal realization of who we are and the ultimate purpose of our
lives. The impact on psychotherapists and their clients could not be
greater.
“Introduction to Quantum Psychology” reviews the battle
round-by-round and attempts to interpret the conflict through a lens
of psychotherapeutic introspection. Topics that will be tracked
through their historical development include the role of
consciousness in determining reality, acausal synchronicity, the
brain-computer analogy, and object relations seen from an information
theoretic perspective. Because much of the course material is open to
broad interpretation, a free-wheeling discussion of psychological
relevance is encouraged and expected.
